Schengen Transit Visa – Yes or No?
What is a transit Visa?
Transit can be through Land, Water or Air. Short-term (usually 24 hours) visa that allows a passenger to travel across or through the issuing country on way to another country. Commonly, it allows the in-transit passenger to go out of an airport or port for an overnight stay
Schengen Transit Visa
“A” category stands for the Airport Transit Visa which allows its holder to travel through the international zone of the Schengen Country Airport without entering the Schengen Country Area. Airport transit visa is mandatory for the citizens traveling from one non-Schengen state to another non-Schengen state through a change of flights in a Schengen Country airport. My office receives queries that I was confirmed that a visa isn’t required for Indian national while transiting through Schengen Airport e.g. Germany, France, Austria etc, however, I was held by immigration stating that necessary visa isn’t available and I need to provide undertaking or I need to go back to home country. Let me explain this
Keep in mind that with an airport transit visa you are not allowed to stay overnight or leave the airport. You are allowed only a short stay in the international transit area
Airport transit privilege does not apply in the following cases and you will need to get a visitor visa if:
- You have to pick up your baggage and/or have to check-in again
- You are transiting through two or more airports in the Schengen Countries
- You have an open ticket
- Your stay in the international transit area more than 12 hours
Transit visa requirement may differ from country to country, it is advisable to ensure that you have the necessary visa when you are transiting through the 3rd country i.e. not your actual destination neither your home country.
